I have mentored a couple of design projects for EE/CS seniors at the University of Davis in California (UC Davis for locals). Besides being incredibly fun, 4 kids working for 5 months can do some pretty creative things. This year I'm looking at doing something focused on the environment and am open to suggestions for topics to go after. Some possible themes:
- Visualization -- Show the effects of climate change in a way that makes it visible and easier to reason about. Example: analyze drone aerial photography of oak savannahs to measure change in tree canopies over time.
- Adaptation -- Help people and environments adapt to changes now and in future. Example: Analyze fire risk and/or help distribute information when fires occur. (Maybe a phone app to make data easily accessible to residents?)
- Mitigate -- Help address root causes of climate change. Example: use behavioral data from browsers and phones to compute carbon footprints automatically and suggest ways to reduce. We use the same data to drive ads now; why not use it to solve bigger problems?
Open to ideas, so throw them out there. Thanks for reading!
